Mark and I LOVE the character of old homes and knew we wanted to feature a tin ceiling in our home renovation!

Mark built a recessed ceiling (it’s also called a tray ceiling) above our kitchen island for the tin tiles. We think this is a great way to add personality to the kitchen that’s on budget and also still classic!

We chose silver tin tiles, and there will be 3 pendant lights hanging down over the island.

Mark salvaged the green pendant lights from a warehouse on the North Side several years ago. I wasn’t sold on the color at first, but it’s grown on me! I really like the color contrast with the white kitchen cabinets and the butcher block counter top.

I read a lot of blogs about kitchen renovations before we started. My biggest takeaways were to go with classic color cabinets (like white) and then to make the kitchen unique/trendy/modern/cool with decorative features.

The tile ceiling adds that throwback/classic touch and the pendant lights give an industrial/modern vibe!
